Kiet’s predilection for large bovine masses is legendary. What used to be a “hobby” has been made more important as he struggles to supply the entire server’s leather demands. To that end, he was saying that he needed to expand his wheat farm to feed said leather-on-the-hoof.

I have no idea why this lit a fire under me, but it did. I have spent the last several days working on a giant tower of wheat near the Savanna spawn. Tonight I am officially opening it for business. Each of the 20 floors is 8×8 in size so it will yield a full stack of wheat and seed (plus a bit more seed). Originally I was going to have 54 floors so it would fill an entire double chest with wheat on each harvest, but nobody would ever use it because nobody would want to replant it. Twenty seemed to be a nicely round number and will give nearly a single chest worth of wheat on each harvest.

Now to the touchy part.

Because of the planting, build trust is set to public. Please don’t abuse this. I’m trusting everyone with quite a bit of my hard work.

If you hit that harvest button, you had best be ready to spend the time to replant it. I will rain hellfire on anyone that doesn’t replant.

Due to the design with the various bits of halfslab I used, there are a couple spots where seeds and/or wheat will get stuck. (also it gets lodged in the gate where you get to each floor) After you harvest, it’s a good idea to run each floor to look for stragglers. I usually load up with seed and run each floor to the top and start replanting my way down the tower. Stuff sometimes gets stuck on the hay bales in the drop chute on the upper half too, watch for those.

Replanting the whole thing takes 15+ minutes, plan accordingly. This sounds bad, but it can take longer than that to have all the wheat and seeds filter into the chests, so by the time you get done replanting, most of the wheat should be in the chests.

Harvesting is simple.
1. Hit the button at the back
2. Go out front and watch stuff rain down
3. When it stops falling, go hit the button again
4. REPLANT

The mechanism is simple, but the redstone is exposed in the back, please try not to break it. If you do and don’t know how to fix it, contact someone that does (ideally me).

I’m technically still working on the farm, so don’t mess with the roof. I am also planning on setting up a sorting and storage system in the future. I might even convert some of the floors to other crops.

If you need less than a metric buttload of wheat, go ahead and harvest as many floors by hand as you need. If you just need a bit of wheat, go ahead and grab some of the stock in the chest, but come by at some point and harvest/plant to replace it please.

This thing will generate a gargantuan amount of seed, when it’s done filtering down, feel free to pare it down to 20 stacks of seed in the chest. There is no real need to keep more around since that’s all you can plant. If you need seed, go ahead and take anything beyond the 20 stacks needed to replant.

Enjoy.

My predilection for large bovine masses also supplies a steady stream of nutritious and hardy steak as well as supplying the high demand of leather. But Aze you sir are amazing and my bovines thank you! 🙂

so. az. i went by to use this monster of a farm and someone used it and only replanted the bottom 3 levels(the ones you can see from the ground, sneaky guy). I do hope you live up to your word and rain hellfire on them.

A few changes at the Wheat Tower….

I finally got off my butt and put in a sorting system for it. So now all the drops should filter up into the two chests in the picture. The middle chest I put in for storing bread and hay bales.

Hopefully I worked the system out to minimize lag. The hoppers involved are covered by solid blocks wherever possible which should eliminate the excess “check above the hopper to see if there’s anything to suck in” checks. There is also an overflow system that should destroy excess seeds.

The signs at the back list the people on the harvest list, if the chests get empty, bug me or one of them to come do a harvest.
