I said I wouldn’t post an update but I am anyway. So 😛

So, in my opinion, Bukkit is beyond the point of recovery. It has been a flood of people leaving the project and I honestly do not see how the community can recover. Mojang is still a relatively small company that may not have the manpower to defeat a DMCA “attack” and updating to 1.8.

The fact that Spigot is dependent on Bukkit is proving to perhaps no longer be true. The Spigot team have found a work-a-round from this DMCA crap. Here is how it works.. Their last build before the DMCA shut them down was build #1649 (which i have saved). You no longer can get this build from their site, BUT, they are releasing “Patches” for this build. These patches do not violate the DMCA. So Spigot is now operational and working on updates. Spigot has a 1.8 update available except it is just 1.7.10 made accessible by 1.8 clients. Time will tell if Spigot can pull off the full update to 1.8. They seem like the last hope.

Now there is rumors of Microsoft buying Mojang which I hope is false. Mojang is a company that I feel wouldn’t submit to bigger companies. The main worry of mine with this type of transition is, would Microsoft tell Mojang to halt active development of Minecraft and release a final product? Active updates are what make this game most popular. This all could simply be rumor though.

Also one last thing that bothers me, Mojang’s twitter feed has been ominously quiet lately..

It’s been a funny few months. Every time I think the drama has reached it’s lowest, somebody finds a way to take it down to new and more depressing depths. Why can’t we just have nice things ?!?!

Didn’t Mojang hire the guy that had been doing the mod api back before 1.7 dropped?

Considering how long mods have been around (and bukkit and plugins), you’d think they would have gotten an official one together by now. In theory, an official mod api has been being worked on by the guy that used to do it for free for a year now, and yet it still isn’t out.

Personally, I’d be happy playing 1.7 forever if that is what it takes to keep control over the way the server runs. But I’m a bit worried that the amount of bullshit people will have to wade through to get things done like they have been will just be too much for people. Mojang really has little or no incentive to keep the community happy since they only make money selling accounts, not from servers or mods or all the other stuff. Eventually we have to get to a point where sales of Minecraft plateau and Mojang starts to “lose” money. I know they have assloads of money and could not bring in another dime for a decade and still keep going, but businesses (even labors of love like Mojang) don’t like doing that.

If I were able to whisper in Jeb’s ear… I would tell them to get an official mod api and server architecture out that will support plugins. Make it as close to what is out there already as they can legally so that mod makers and plugin makers don’t have a lot to change. And to get that shit out NOW. Contact plugin makers, buy their IP and incorporate stuff like GP into the server code. Add in all the stuff that *every* server runs anyway into their own code. They have enough money to spend on IP and lawyers to straighten things out. Do it now.

Mojang employed four of the core developers from bukkit, the acquisition of bukkit was part of the agreement when they took on those guys. I would argue that Mojang do make money indirectly from existing customers, it’s those guys that build the community and make Minecraft what it is, which in turn helps Minecraft’s standing develop and drives more sales.

Notch claimed to have a ten year plan, with enough funds to let Mojang continue at a loss for ten years (when that time came), then call it a day. However, with the current Microsoft issue, I would say that everything else is pretty much moot, for the time being. 😕

For anybody that hasn’t seen, Notch’s response to the Microsoft rumours, I mean Doom… That’s it, Doom.
