I’m starting a forum thread to show the progress I’m making toward building us a new server home. Amounts below are approximate as prices will vary over time. It looks like $412 for a 3.5ghz machine or $485 for a 4ghz machine. As time goes on I’ll obtain these parts and we can break away from shared hardware!

  • 244.99 – AMD FX-8350 Eight-Core 4GHz CPU + Mobo above
  • 119.99 – AMD FX-8320 Eight-Core 3.5GHz CPU
  • 49.99 – SanDisk 128GB Solid State Drive

  • Bought this today. Supports QoS that we’ll need to route Minecraft related traffic above all others as this type of traffic is light and sensitive to delay. Additionally it supports DDNS through no-ip.com which we used before for our serve-beer address. Once the machine is built, I want to move off of the dreaded godaddy to no-ip.com so we can have dynamic DNS in the rare once-a-year occurrence that our public IP changes.

If anyone has concerns about us going forward with the server purchase, let me know. I want to hear anything you have to say! Feel free to reply in this thread or send me a personal message.

  • We have been running one of these for a couple of years now, it has been rock solid (and fast) so far.

I wanted to babble on about the update, even if it is a bore maybe it’ll help answer questions for somebody. So here it goes.

  • We are running CentOS 7, which was released only 5 months ago. I don’t like how they enforce an extra layer of file security with selinux and firewallD to replace IPTables. This caused major headaches for me.
  • Zombies will now track villagers. I have the extra CPU, so hell why not.
  • All settings, view distance, mob spawning etc, is back to normal vanilla settings
  • We have 59G SSD out of 93G available.
  • Jackal’s Den went from a 2.5G RAM server (needed the .5G for system resources) to a 4G server with a spare 3.5G available to use for, stuff..
  • Snapshots of the timings were taken before and after the upgrade. Which proves that my map/plugins were never to blame
  • Old Machine : http://timings.aikar.co/?url=9374784
    New Machine : http://timings.aikar.co/?url=9451924

  • On my router, the QoS settings work great. When I didn’t have HTTPS in the rules we noticed a huge difference logging into the minecraft server from when I added it into the rules. Minecraft servers use HTTPS to get the UUID of a player from Mojang, and when HTTPS was set to normal priority it caused login lag.
  • We now do not use swap. Set swappiness to 0. Old server would swap to disk during high load times, which caused an even higher load.
  • On the previous server, if I rebooted the Virtual Machine, I would have to start up mysql, teamspeak and multicraft daemon manually. Now they will start on their own if the server itself was rebooted. Also, from hitting the power button to boot the server up, to the minecraft server coming online is about 40 seconds.
  • On my todo list for another day, is to fix the usage graph on the main page. Also I need to switch our domain to no-ip.com.
  • I’ve cancelled the nightly reboot. Not needed anymore.
  • I want to send out the BIGGEST of THANK YOUS to all those that have donated and those that have pledged a donation! This whole thing couldn’t have happened without the support!
