Post Future of dynmap?

When running dynmap it hogs up a good third of the server’s CPU and Memory. I think that as our map has grown to a astronomical size, dynmap is beginning to cause us a lot of trouble. I don’t think dynmap was ever meant be this size. At the moment, our dynmap is a collection of 350,000 files.

At the moment, dynmap is disabled. I’m seeing if we have lag with it or not. If you are looking for your claim and use dynmap to find your claims, you can alternatively do the command “/claimslist” to get the coords.

So, a question I have for you all would be, would you mind if dynmap was gone? Short replies are fine.

Thanks all for your input!

Doesn’t bother me,

Also ban minimaps if Dynmap continues to be disabled.

would i mind? ya, it’s nice. Would I mind enough to be annoyed if it removed a significant amount of lag? no.

So, i guess it depends on how bad it fucks up the server. Which it sounds like you are figuring out right now.

Fuck the banning mini-map idea. Fuck everything about that.

Like I said in-game, if there is a substitute program that does not use live mapping, I could easily be content with that. It isn’t really all that useful to know player locations or be able to talk to people while I’m not in-game (and the interface for it sucks regardless).

As for a straight yes or no to the original question: no, I don’t mind if dynmap bites the dust.

I’d like to propose a half and half solution (if it’s possible/stops the lag still) And just have a Smaller daily cache version of dynmap (Not-Dynamic-map?) so we can still inspect what we are doing and where things are but we don’t get to chat or stalk people.

If an option as stated above is not available and removing dynmap causes significant reductions in lag I’m very much FOR removing it.

I rarely use dynamap for anything else but lurking and checking to see whose on and on the two occasions that I did use dynamap it was to find my two islands to set up base. Other than that I tend to stay in certain area(s) and I don’t do much exploration of the surrounding land unless I’m adjusting or resizing my claim. So if getting rid of dynamap means more space for the upcoming update and less lag I’m all for it. 😀

Why so serious? 😎

I agree with Quibs view. It’s a persons choice to have a minimap, it’s just a smaller dynmap and we’ve had a dynmap as long as i’ve been on the server.

And enforcing a minimap ban wouldn’t be particularly easy. (though I trust people would abide, it’s the kind of community I’ve come to know)

the only thing i disagree on is cave-mapping and monster radar for minimaps.

I always have dynmap open when I am playing. So I would be a little bummed to see it go, but at the same time if it’s causing too much lag then that’s fine.
No lag > dynmap
